We Love Reading
What are we in great need of in the 21st century? Obviously, it’s talent. Previous experience showed that much reading is a key to become a talent. In fact, reading has a huge influence on our daily life. A good book can cultivate our character, and build up our personal thinking. No wonder we say: knowledge is power.
Over years, people have changed their ways to read books. As students, we would rather keep time for our study than hobbies. However, if we have spare time, most of us are going to read because reading makes us relaxed. We read not only masterpieces but also comics and magazines that can cheer us up. Today, paper-made books can’t satisfy our requirements anymore. Books on the Internet provide us with various resources and give us more opportunities to choose. This leads to a fashion about reading on the Internet for most youth.
But how can we find terrific books when we are in school? Thanks to our school library, we can have a chance to enjoy reading after tiring study. Some students go to the school library at lunch break frequently. They are always lost in thoughts, in entertaining stories. With the help of knowledge from books, they are more confident and creative than others.
We love reading, because reading is beneficial to our soul. We love reading, because reading is the best means to acquire knowledge. We love reading, because reading makes us understand the world better. So why don’t we read? Let’s try, enjoy it, finally you’ll love it!
Good afternoon, everyone. Today I'm honored to be here to share my opinions on reading.
Flowers cannot be separated from the warm sunshine; Fish cannot survive without the clear streams. So do man. We can not do without the nourishment—— books! The best of mural decorations is books. They are more varied in color and appearance than any wallpaper. They are more attractive in design, and they have the prime advantage of being separate personalities, so if you sit alone in the room, in the light, you are surrounded with intimate friends. Books are of the people, by the people, for the people. Bacon said, ”Reading makes perfect. ” What a love of reading! Really, we learn the strength to overcome difficulties. We add a wealth of knowledge. We wander in a paradise for spirit. We read together, happy together, share!
Holding beautiful essays and poems, you can enjoy the most true love in the world. The great dead are beyond our physical reach, and the great living are usually almost as inaccessible. At any moment, in a private library, you can converse with Socrates or Shakespeare or Dickens or Austen. They wrote for you, to entertain you, to make a favorable impression. Only instead of seeing them masked, you look into their innermost part of heart.
So, my friends, let us fall in love with reading! Whether it is poetry or prose, fiction or nonfiction, newspapers or magazines, just do not forget, stay in one place, then to your favorite book! Short as our life is, what is more enjoyable than reading?
Reading Makes a Full Man
初二（5）班 尹 伦
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen!
My topic today is “Reading Makes a Full Man”. Francis Bacon once said, “Reading makes a full man.” Then what is a full man like? A full man is a man with wisdom, delight, courage and dreams. Reading can give us all of them if we love it.
First, reading gives us wisdom. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was famous for his detective stories about Sherlock Holmes. We can learn a lot from Holmes. He could make exact decisions by his experience all the time. The stories tell us how to think, how to make plans, and how to find out the truth. We gain wisdom by reading such stories.
Reading gives us delight. Mark Twain wrote many interesting novels, like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn. These nice stories bring us sometimes into mysterious forests, sometimes into dark caves, sometimes to small islands. The stories are suitable for people of all ages. When we are alone or feel upset, just find a book like this and read it, we’ll soon be happy. We gain much delight and pleasure from reading.
Reading gives us courage. In libraries there are many masterpieces written by disabled celebrities and some biographies about their life, like Helen Keller’s the Story of My Life. These books encourage us a lot, especially when we fail the test and feel disappointed or when we come across some difficulties in our life. They let us keep going on. We gain perseverance and courage from these books.
Reading gives us dreams. Science fictions are always exciting and attractive. They are full of imagination, like Jules Vern’s Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea. When we read them, we sometimes go up into the outer -space, sometimes go down to the sea floor, sometimes go back to the ancient times, sometimes go ahead to the future. They give us many brand new ideas and dreams. We gain imagination and creativity.
Come on! Let’s start reading. The more we read, the more we gain. Remember, reading makes a full man!
Enjoy Every Moment of Reading
Good afternoon, my dear teachers. It’s my great honour to be here to give you a speech. The topic of my speech is Enjoy Every Moment of Reading.
In my mind, the word ‘read’ can be divided into four parts. Each letter has its own meaning. ‘R’ means receiving. We always hear ‘Giving is receiving’. And also, reading is receiving. I love the relaxing feelings in this free area. I love fighting for the true love between Romeo and Juliet with William Shakespeare. I love listening to the bell from the Notre Dame with Victor Hugo. I love to experience special adventures with Tom Sawyer in Mark Twain’s stories. I love to argue with Mr. Darcy in Jane Austin’s homeland. From reading, I have made a lot of good friends. Even if we’re miles and miles apart, even if we stride across thousands of years, I can feel the great characters with me at every moment of my life.
‘E’ means enjoying. ‘I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.’ says Borges. In my spare time, reading has been one of my greatest hobbies. It’s time of adventure, of exploration, of relaxation.
And ‘A’ is adding. Bacon said, ‘Reading makes a full man.’ Now more and more people are interested in reading. The main characters’ personalities always affect me a lot. They inspire me. They let me know: By your great effort, you will be the winner!
The last letter ‘D’ means decorating. It makes my life more and more colorful. From reading, I decorate my life with Hamlet’s honesty, with Helen Keller’s perseverance, with A Q’s optimism and with Jane Eyre’s courage.
My friends, the most dullest person is the person who has never read books; The most stingy person is the person who has never bought books; And the most superficial
person is the person who has never fallen in love with books. So, come on! Let’s have fun reading! Let’s enjoy reading as a perfect love! Let’s enjoy every moment of our lives!
Let Us Read Together
Knowledge may be acquired through many ways. One way of getting knowledge is from traveling. Another way is by conversation, especially with a great man. A person may also become knowledgeable through other ways such as listening to the radio or watching television. In the 21st century, you can also get information through the Internet. I love reading and I think the best way to acquire knowledge, however, is through reading.
Reading as a mean of obtaining knowledge has a number of advantages over many other ways. To begin with, it is the most consistent way of getting knowledge. Everyone can read regularly but few people can often travel. Secondly, you can read anywhere at any time while you can’t do other things like traveling and surfing on the Internet. Finally, you may have great pleasure when you’re reading. For example, when you read famous masterpieces, you can know a lot about the background of the story and you can have deep imagination about what will happen next. You can’t enjoy these by doing anything else.
People often say that gold and silver are the most valuable things in the world. But I don’t think so. In my opinion, to read books is more valuable than anything else. The old saying ”To open a book is always helpful.” clearly tells us how good it is to read a book.
I love reading books. Books are our teachers. They teach us truth, science, literature, and philosophy of life. Besides, they increase our knowledge, enlarge our experience, and strengthen our character. They lead us down the road to success. Books tell us what is good and what is evil.
So, to read more books is the best thing for us young students.
However, there are some problems about reading. There are all kinds of books in society. Some are good, while others are bad. Good books are beneficial to our soul while bad ones are harmful to our mind. Therefore, it is of great importance for the reader to separate good plants from wild weeds. We should read helpful books and reject harmful ones.
I love reading very much. And I do hope all of you can choose good books and enjoy reading them. Having a good reading habit is always good for your life and study. So everyone, let us read together!
The World in Our Hands
Sitting in a comfortable chair, and opening a book slowly, I suddenly enter a different world. Yes, that’s one of my gratifying pastimes—reading. Since I first began to read, I’ve had a lot of happiness that reading brings me.
Jane Eyre is my favorite book. I could almost feel Jane’s breath when I was reading the book. “You think I could stay here to become nothing to you. Do you think because I‘m poor and obscure and plain that I’m heartless and soulless? I have as much soul as you and fully as much heart.” These memorable quotes stayed in my heart and moved me. That’ the power of a book. It contains the author’s crystallization of wisdom and emotion. It delights me and teaches me so much about life.
“Read thousands of books, travel thousands of miles.” tells me how much good reading can do for us. You hope to travel around the world but you don’t have a chance to go? Then, how about exploring with Robinson on the island or visiting the mysterious country—Atlantis with Captain Nemo? When we have a book, we have the world in our hands. Reading can open up our minds and widen our horizons. I often imagine I’m just the character in the books, and try to experience the situations they had—that’s crazy. It fires my imagination. When I was reading, I was having a wonderful trip!
“We are very busy. We don’t have enough time to read.“ Some students complained to me. Yes, we often face these problems—too much homework and our parents always say, “Go to study! Don’t waste your time on these useless novels!”
“Why?” I demanded. The world is changing very rapidly. It is becoming increasingly difficult to keep abreast of what is going on. One way in which we can understand what is happening, however, is by engaging in outside reading. “How can you say it is useless?”
I love reading newspapers and traditional literature. My friends and I often talk about our favorite books and share our opinions with each other. It really gives us a good influence in life.
So, I say to you today, my friends, no matter old or young, no matter rich or poor, no matter you are a genius or just an ordinary person, just go inside the world of books and the world will be in our hands. Let reading broaden our outlook on life! Come on, you and me!
